The vIdeo and SIgnal Processing For Telecommunications (ISIP40) research team was founded in 1991 by Prof. Carlo Regazzoni starting from the expertise acquired in the Signal Processing and Telecommunications Group of Prof. Gianni Vernazza. The group is currently leaded by Prof. Regazzoni, Full Professor at the University of Genova, and by Prof. Lucio Marcenaro, Assistant Professor, and can rely on 5 PhD students, 5 research grant co-operators and a number of external collaborators. Teaching activities allow to involve BS and MS students in the research activities of the team. Thanks to co-operations with industries and other university groups, two new joint laboratories has been created: Ambient Awareness Laboratory (A2Lab) and Cognitive Radio Laboratory, whose research activities are focused on Cognitive Surveillance and Video Surveillance and on Cognitive Radio and Wideband Communications. The research group has a number of active projects with national and international industries and academic partners.
Ambient Intelligence area is oriented to provide increased personalized services to the user. This tasks is obtained by developing systems composed by heterogeneous sensors able to extract high-level features. Subsequently analysis, decision and personalized communications are the main steps in order to satisfy the users query depending to the context.
Cognitive Surveillance research area is involved in developing automatic systems able to recognize events of interests. Mainly, the research is oriented to realize automatic systems able to detect and track objects and to recognize particular situations as panic events in area of interest. Using this information, bio-inspired techniques are designed to provide the system with the capability of learning from the experience the interactions with the external world. Then, adaptive decision strategies exploit this skill to act (through actuators) directly on the environment and change its current state for security, in case preventive, tasks. Within the Cognitive Radio research field, main activities are focused on Signal Processing Techniques for Spectrum Monitoring, Mode Identification and Classification, new architectures for multimodal receivers. By using Time-Frequency techniques and Pattern Recognition procedures, new algorithms for air interfaces identification have been developed in case of superimposed modes to make the terminal aware of the external environment.
Ambient Awareness Lab (A2Lab) is a permanent research agreement established in September 2005 between TechnoAware and the Department of Biophysical and Electronic Engineering (DIBE) of the University of Genoa, which aims to enhance the respective training, research and technological transfer activities within the ambient intelligence field. Dr Regazzoni is also the academic responsible of the Security Lab section of the Region Liguria industrial- academic consortium on Intelligent Integrated Systems (SIIT) as well as member of the Scientifical Technical Committee of SIIT.
The technology district of Liguria on Integrated Intelligent Systems aim at developing applied research activities, defining and developing prototypes on the basis of the research activities, informing, assisting and training on intelligent integrated systems technologies, promoting and stimulating technology transfer activities for enterprises both through incubators for SMEs and/or spin offs from University, supporting innovative entrepreneurship, attracting innovative companies in this field to invest in Liguria.
